Many in Wellington might be familiar with Torque Sounds, the electronic music collective bringing the custom Tubs audio sound system to electronic gigs around the city. Going late into the night on Saturday the 15^th of August at Valhalla, the Torque Sounds rig will be slung up on high beam at Girls Torque, an event celebrating wāhine DJs of Pōneke who will select an assortment of electronic, bass, house, and techno to sate your ears all night long.

On the bill we have M.Cap, co-founder of Nine Oh Nine, which runs girls and femmes-only DJ workshops; multidisciplinary artist Selena, a staple in the underground scene and co-founder of Nine Oh Nine; Fortuna, founder of Fortunes, known for deep, prog, and melodic house and techno nights; Malware, one of the city’s busiest DJs and co-founder of Venom events; Fluffcore, co-founder of TGF club nights; and Claire-voyant, who cut her teeth in the gritty underground party scene of London where she first hosted Girls Torque events.

Girls Torque Pōneke is a transplant of the original club nights that began in 2002 at The Fridge in Brixton. Claire-voyant tells us, “At the time, putting wāhine behind the decks was still a statement, and an all-female lineup was exactly that.”

This time around it’s the same name, same energy, new city, new era. Girls Torque is a place of love and no judgment. Open to all, they invite you to kanikani to your heart’s content in the safety of excellent sound.
