Giggles connect us by Madelaine Empson
Calling all tamariki! Especially the ones who like cake! Circus, slapstick, and magic are about to combine in one very special, very messy adventure at Circa Theatre these school holidays. In Kitchen Chaos, Rollicking Entertainment will bring your favourite magicians and world’s worst cleaners – sensible Spray and excitable Wipe – to life on stage from the 15th to the 26th of April, with meet and greets available with the characters after every show.
You’ve seen The Messy Magic Adventure, so what crazy antics could Spray and Wipe be up to this time? Well, they’ve been invited to a fabulous surprise party – which calls for cake! But after a terrible cake-squishing incident, magic is let loose in the kitchen. With flour on the floor, crushed cream everywhere, and disappearing milk, everything turns topsy-turvy and our heroes must learn how baking even works minutes before the party starts. Cue the chaos!
Co-writer and performer Lizzie Tollemache says her favourite part of the Messy Magic world is “hearing about littlies quoting from the show and acting out bits at home, days (and sometimes weeks!) after seeing it”.
“When we are on stage, what I love the most is seeing the absolute delight when the little ones have realised something that the characters haven’t. And the squeals when they get to tell us all about it during the show!”
She hopes Kitchen Chaos audiences are reminded “that silliness and giggles connect us. And that stories don’t have to be big or flash to be important to a small child. It’s about the quality of the experience we create together in the room. And that’s priceless.”
